European Super League: EU Parliament votes to oppose breakaway competitions

The European Parliament voted against the withdrawal sporting event after the abandoned Super League project. The
MP wants European sports culture to be “in line with EU values of solidarity, sustainability, participation for all, open competition, the benefits and fairness of sports”. Said.

A total of 576 members voted against the Super League in a non-binding resolution, with 36 votes against and 55 abstaining.
The European Parliament said the withdrawal competition undermines EU values and “threats the stability of the entire sports ecosystem.”

Some of Europe’s largest football clubs sought to create their own tournament in April called the Super League. The
project failed after 48 hours due to widespread opposition from supporters and the European government.
However, three clubs, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, have announced that their plans to leave the UEFA Champions League are “waiting”.
days before the vote, Super League promoters sent a letter to the EU accusing UEFA of conflicts of interest and antitrust violations.

UEFA President Alexander Cheferin welcomed the vote, saying that the Governing Body will continue to work with the EU “to strengthen and protect the European sports model in European football.” The vote in
Strasbourg came after a report by former professional soccer player MEP Tomasz Frankowski of Poland. 4,444 lawmakers also called for more money to be distributed to amateur sports on Tuesday, but did not propose a detailed plan for the solidarity mechanism.

“MEP wants to balance the commercial interests of professional sports with their social functions by strengthening the connection between grassroots and elite sports,” the European Parliament said Tuesday. The
Legislature also promised to take action against gender inequality and harassment in sports, “especially with respect to payments and equal representation of sports organizations on the board”.
